Locally, there are a lot of fruit-bearing plants that we can be familiar of. Some of these are edible while they are not sold to market. We may see them in our local village just around the yard or in the road. We usually pick them up and even eat them. While some of us know them locally, we may not know what they are called in English.

There are a lot of fruits and vegetables which have local names. And surprisingly, they also have names in English which could come very interesting to us. And here are just some of these. Familiar? Check out their English names.

  1. Bilimbi Fruit

It is widely called as cucumber tree or tree sorrel in English but the tree itself is native to most tropical countries.Bilimbi fruit are used in many medicinal purposes because of its high acidic properties. Bilimbi Juice is used medicinally throughout Asia.

  1. Wild Passion Fruit

While its ripe fruit are edible, its leaves contain cyanic acid and are thought to be poisonous to people and livestock.

  1. Spanish Plum

They are commonly named hog plums, Spanish plums, libas in Bikol and in some cases golden apples for their brightly colored fruit which resemble an apple or small plum at a casual glance. They are only distantly related to apple and plum trees, however.

  1. Monkey Pod

Is edible and its flower flowers look like pink powder puffs and they produce nectar to attract various pollinators.

  1. Currant

The pleasant, sweet-tart taste of currants has been cherished for many years.

  1. Cotton Fruit

There are two varieties of santol fruit, previously considered two different species, the yellow variety and the red. The difference is in the color that the older leaves turn before falling.

  1. Black Plum

The black plum is known to relieve stomach pain, carminative, anti-scorbutic and diuretic.

  1. Water Apple

The fruit is a bell-shaped, edible berry, with varying colors. Water apple perennial evergreen plant also used as ornamental fragrant more than just eating it.

  1. Cape Gooseberry

A doctor claimed that this fruit is “Great for skin cancer, killing lots of different kinds of bacteria, leishmaniasis, anaplasmosis… and more”

  1. Kerson Fruit

The ancients knew of the benefits of Kerson Fruit and also of its leaves, so they dried those leaves, crushed them up, and made tea.The Cherry-like fruits are known to have a lot of health benefits.
