When Women Became Men: A Losing Out Tradition Of Albanian ‘Sworn Virgins.’

In the outskirts of Albania, in the remote Balkans village, an interesting practice is slowly dying out but leaves a different story that will surprise you. Knocking into the door, a man would perhaps open the door for you but when you dig into the story, you’ll find something else.

A centuries-old tradition forces women to become men if there is no male presence in the family. The tradition recognizes the patriarchal responsibility, however, if there is no male, women are designated as men. The rise of the “sworn virgins.”

Females eventually ignore their identity and instead pledge celibacy so they can afford the rights and freedom of a man. Those families which have all girls will raise the youngest as a man. They eventually dress her with male clothes.

Growing old, they also hang out with men and work with them. While it became a struggle, some find the tradition hard to understand.
