After winning the prestigious Oscar Award for Best Actor recently, Leonardo DiCaprio almost had it all. This award-winning actor and producer is also an environmental activist. DiCaprio is the current UN Messenger of Peace focusing on climate change.
That’s the reason why his speech during the Academy Awards is about the awareness on climate change and global warming.
“Let us not take this planet for granted.” A line in his speech.
Last 2005, Leo bought a really mind-boggling 104-acre private island in Belize worth $1.75 million. This is according to a report from the New York Times. Together with a partner, and the Paul Scialla, they will transform the Belizean island into an eco-resort that will restore itself as the time goes by. It will be called “Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island”. It is planned to open in 2018.
On his first visit on the island, DiCaprio told The New York Times,
“It was like heaven on earth. And almost immediately, I found this opportunity to purchase an island there.”
Leonardo and his team plan to put up a luxury yet eco-conscious resort on the island. Not only villas, infinity pools, and views are the main purpose of the project, but also, rehabilitating the island that already suffered from over-fishing, eroding coastline, and deforestation.
Initial renders include arc-shaped platform with villas over water together with artificial reefs below. According to reports, about 68 resort villas and 48 private houses will be made in the island which are expected to cost about $5 million to $15 million each. Still there are other ones for the guests.
The Blackadore Caye is a 45-minute boat ride from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City. Taking a 15-minute boat ride from San Pedro, will bring you to the island. According to Juan Rovalo, a biologist who leads a team of scientists studying the island, the island has been used for hundreds of years.
