The first presidential debate held in Cagayan de Oro on Sunday, February 21 has brought great interest on the Filipino people all over the world. The debate has been joined by all the candidates named VP Jejomar Binay, Sen. Grace Poe, Sec. Mar Roxas, Mayor Rody Duterte, and Sen. Miriam Santiago.
There are lot of things happened in the debate arranged by GMA 7, Philippine Inquirer, and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). But, one of the most talked about by the people is the respect and relationship between Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte.
As all the candidates have been paired to confront each other, Santiago and Duterte seemed to be just admiring each other while defending each other in certain issues being thrown and expressed by the two.
“It’s good that Ma’am Miriam is here because she is one of the two only qualified to run this country,” Mayor Duterte said on the video.
On a question regarding Santiago’s health, Duterte then defended her saying,
“I will not debate with Ma’am Miriam. She’s telling you the truth. I do not see Miriam passing away in the next 20 years.”
This is how Senator Miriam responded,
“I felt sorry for my country,” Senator Miriam said, “because graft and corruption is endemic and everybody speaks out but nobody has done much, except Mayor Rody Duterte,” she added.
This really joyed Mayor Duterte and the crowd responded in applause.
Another thing that really is a trend in social media right now is the hugging of the two respected presidential candidates, Mayor Duterte and Senator Miriam. People even did memes and even comparing them with current love teams in the showbiz like JaDine (James Reid & Nadine Lustre), AlDub (Alden Richards & Maine Mendoza, a.k.a Dubsmash Queen or even KathNiel (Kathrine Bernardo & Daniel Padilla). The hashtag, #DuRiam (Duterte-Miriam) is really a click to the netizens.
