love stories 3

This love story is almost too sweet to bear. James Burke was introduced to Lauretta shortly after returning home from war in 1945. Knowing he had to marry this woman, he didn’t waste a single second asking for her hand. However, Lauretta stood her ground that she needed to finish college first–and she did. She graduated on a Tuesday and they were married that Saturday. Over 60 love-filled years brought this couple nine children, 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and, sadly, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for Lauretta and heart complications for James. According to his granddaughter Colleen, James began “basically living for her” after her diagnosis. So when it was clear James wouldn’t be around to help Lauretta any longer, he used his last minutes alive to write out instructions to provide his wife with the best care possible. What’s that saying? Love is selfless, love is kind? Yeah, this time it sure was.
