Paper is the most common material used in creating art pieces. May it be for painting, drawing, origami, sculptures, and many others. But here’s another stunning art work created from this thin and weightless material. Hong Kong-born, Pittsburgh-based artist Bovey Lee makes beautiful pieces of art by cutting into paper.
“My life long love affair with art begins with practicing Chinese calligraphy and pencil drawing since age ten. When I cut paper, it is a visceral reaction and natural response to my affection for precision, detail, and subtlety,” Bovey said.
She delicately hand-cuts each work on Chinese rice paper with silk backing.
And skillfully removes negative space and small details from the fragile, weightless material.
The amount of time and precision it takes to complete just one cut…
Is all worth it when you see the results are as spectacular as this.
Her works cover includes subject based on surreal images…
Ornate vases embellished with exquisite details…
And even abstract patterns.
Her finished products present a three-dimensional illusion.
As Bovey puts it, “Power, sacrifice, and survival are the underlying narratives in my cut paper works. Within the parameters of these three subjects, I create layered and dramatic stories referencing my life experiences, response to headline news, and concerns for urban and environmental issues.”
And just the thought she has done it all with her own two hands, it makes her works more impressive.
