When you lose a loved one, you try to find a way to get over the pain and at the same time, make something in her remembrance. In 1870’s, John Cargill, son of Captain William Cargill, lost a daughter who drowned in dangerous rip tide. And because the girl always wanted a private beach, his father decided to give her a present in her memory.
John excavated a passage through a thick stone which gives access to a secluded beach so that his family could bathe in privacy away from the prying eyes of St. Clair – and as a tribute to his lost daughter.
The Tunnel Beach can be reached through a 20 minute drive from central Dunedin.
You’ll make your way through a tunnel 72 steps long.
The Tunnel Beach Walkway is easy and would take one hour return walk.
And when you get to the end of it, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the a beautiful beach.
A place away from the hustle of nearby beaches.
Many locals have been going here, making it a popular destination.
It also has untouched caverns, crevices, and fossil filled cliffs you can explore on all sides.
And the tunnel is your only way to get into this paradise.
