Divers Were Swimming Off The Coast Of Hawaii. What They Encountered There Made Me Say… OH, MY!

A humpback whale is  a baleen whale and a rorqual whale that sings amazing and beautiful songs. They are known for their magical songs, which travel for great distances through the world’s oceans. Humpback Whales are definitely gentle giants. Their curiosity is very obvious as they will investigate most things on the surface of the ocean.

And just as its idyllic weather beckons to tourists around the world, the warm shallow waters (less than 600 feet) surrounding the main Hawaiian Islands are a favorite destination for humpback whales.

So when photographer Masa Ushioda, from Tokyo, Japan, moved to Hona, Hawaii, he and a friend took a swim off the coast of the “Aloha State”.

They were swimming close to a group of humpback whales who are longer than a double decker bus.

Another Of Her Type

When unexpectedly, one weighing 79,366 pounds extended its giant flipper in a peaceful manner as if wanting to shake hands with the diver.

Not satisfied with that “shake hand” interaction, the female whale calmly swam while others happily played next to the diver and his friend.

And then surprised them with a powerful bubble blow.

“This particular female humpback whale – with the white belly – was extremely friendly and very curious about us humans. She extended her pectoral fins to us repeatedly and sought for physical contact. Other male whales around her were dangerous as they were fighting each other to gain access to this white bellied female.

The female whale was exceptional – there are many friendly whales, but they don’t often come in for physical contact – this made it extra special. You can tell in the photographs how friendly she is, she’s just posing for me in every picture.

The female whale was showing off her spectacular ballet dancing along the way. All of a sudden she broke serene silence by blowing bubbles in a forceful way – it was like the explosion of an underwater bomb. Since the seawater is over 800 times denser than air, the impact of the sound wave was amazingly loud and alarming,” Mr. Ushioda narrated.

Mr. Ushioda said the engagement was the best experience he has had with humpback whales.

Share this remarkable encounter and be amused by this friendly humpback whale.
