Self-Taught Artist Creates These Portraits Of Pop Culture Icons Out Of Old Film Tape.. And It’s So Amazing..

Music is our life. Not only because it soothes our soul and spirit when we hear it but it inspires us so often with the message it conveys. Because of our desire for music, most people, especially those musically-inclined are fond of collecting various albums of different musical artists.

Time passes by and we found those albums, films and other tape broken and unusable. What to then? If most of us would easily throw it all away, there’s this one person in the name of Erika Simmons did something beautiful out of it.

Erika Simmons, also known as Erika iri5 creates various portraits of musical and culture pop icons by the use of old film reels, music and VHS cassettes. She transforms these vintage tape films to portraits by unwinding the magnetic tape, cutting and twirling it and arranged it following the basic appearance of different icons.

In an interview Simmons had, she said that she spend her free time researching history science and math as it relates to the tech revolution.

“I like to take these archaic technologies – relics from another world – and in a twisted way preserve them, reinvent them. It’s easy to get boxes of tapes donated today. But what about 30 years from now? I’m trying to capture this spirit of the last century by using the actual objects, speaking through them somehow. I think the world is its own best representation.” she added.
