Pencils or colored pencils are common materials used to create art pieces like drawings and paintings. But Miami-based Columbian-born artist Federico Uribe has taken and used this medium in a new way while developing a new creative process. He will show us that pencils aren’t just for writing or drawing because they can also be for sculptures.
With the use of pencils – a medium that is more customarily used to actually produce the final artwork – Uribe crafts intricate and technically skilled sculpture illustrations.
The conceptual artist starts by gathering colored nubs of all sizes, separates them into individual colors, then creates his artworks by pulling a piece from each pool of color.
He sometimes needs the help of plastic zip-ties fastening the pencils together to make sculptures in his series entitled Pencilism: Sculptures.
Or just simply layers them out flat to produce textured “paintings” in his collection called Pencilism: Paintings.
Uribe’s ability to produce large-scale works with such an ordinary object and redefining its use, is truly astonishing. His repurposed sculptures reimagine the useful life of these objects, turning trash into beautiful sculptures.
Uribe’s works are not only limited to the use of pencils. He also builds stunning pieces out of a hodgepodge of items like shoes, wires, plastic forks, coins, bicycle tires, and many others.
