According to reports from the Daily Mail, the unnamed man explained that “he wanted to get some fresh air” before taking off.

With the man’s action, it’s still not clear if he got detained. But, the China’s Civil Aviation Law states that, “those that cause theft or deliberate destruction, endangering flight safety and causing serious consequences can be held criminally liable.”

According to a report on SCMP, the airline company did not plan to fine or penalize the man involved because he did not harm anyone. It also turns out that the man is first-time flyer according to an airplane staff.

“He did not cause delay or any other direct loss to the airline,” he added.

During the flight, passengers already posted some picture. One of them captioned on his photo, “It’s my first time seeing a passenger open the safety door. He told the attendants he just wanted some fresh air … hope our flight won’t be delayed for too long.”

This is incident wasn’t the first in China. In 2015, there are two people who have been arrested for opening emergency exit doors.

These emergency exit doors in a plane are called overwing exits. They are used for evacuation purposes where there is an evacuation slide is being deployed to exit.
