A sprain is usually referred to an injury of a ligament which is caused by tearing of the fibers. While strains occur when the muscle or the tendon is stretching or tearing. Both could be partial or could be completely torn apart.
There are many known causes of sprain which could happen to any of us, anytime. Your fall, twist, getting hit could result to sprain in which our joint could go out of its normal position. And when it happens, surely it could be a lot painful.
Before sprains and strains could go worst, treatment is a must. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to spend a lot when you can reduce swelling and pain.
In doing so, we consider the RICE approach.
Rest. It is very important especially on the injured part. If you ankle or knee is hurt, crutches or cane should be used.
Ice. For swelling, using ice for the first 48 to 72 hours will help sooth it down. The doctor would usually advise that you do this 4 to 8 times a day.
Compression. This will help decrease the swelling. An elastic compression wrap is usually advised to be worn for the first 24 hours. However when applying, don’t apply the wrap too tightly.
Elevation. By raising you ankle above the level of your heart for hours will decrease bruising and swelling. You can also put the injured part on a pillow.
In applying the above practices, prescribed medicines should be considered. But if the above suggestions doesn’t decrease the pain and swelling, you should see your doctor.
